dvoje / troje
Collective Numbers
Dvoje and troje count certain groups as a whole.
How It Works
With djeca, the counted phrase uses djece: dvoje djece, troje djece. The numeral and noun form a quantity expression.
A subject such as dvoje djece commonly takes neuter singular agreement: dvoje djece je došlo. This differs from bare djeca su došla.
Ordinary nouns retain their usual counting forms, such as dvije knjige. Special forms used to count plural-only objects belong to a related but distinct pattern; do not substitute dvoje everywhere you see the English word two.
