Prefixes and Direction

Level 5

Prefixes in movement verbs often indicate entering, leaving, crossing or approaching. Learn the derived verb’s actual meaning and its complements.

How It Works

U- often contributes entry, iz- exit, and pre- crossing in suitable verbs: ući u sobu, izaći iz kuće, prijeći most. The associated preposition or object construction still needs to be learned.

Prefixes interact with stems, so the result need not preserve the infinitive’s visible spelling: ići → ući and nositi → donijeti cannot be generated by merely attaching letters without checking the resulting verb.

A prefix does not guarantee perfective aspect in every resulting word. Compare ulaziti and izlaziti, imperfective movement verbs that contain the same directional information. Lexical meaning and aspect remain separate questions.

  3. Pažljivo prijeđi cestu.
