Temporal connectors in narration
Use narrative markers to show sequence, overlap and the end of a story.
How It Works
Primer introduces an initial step, després places another event later, and mentrestant shows overlap. Llavors or aleshores can locate an event at that point in the story. Al final introduces what eventually happened at the end.
For a multi-event narrative, distinguish later from simultaneous events. Després introduces something subsequent, while mentrestant lets another action continue in parallel. Llavors can locate an event at the stage just described, and finalment can introduce the eventual outcome.
A connector does not replace a needed tense distinction: mentrestant llegia can supply background, while després va sortir advances the story. Before repeating a marker at every sentence, check whether the chronology is already clear. Use al cap de dos dies when the interval matters, rather than a vague després that leaves the reader guessing how much time passed.
