també, tampoc

També and Tampoc

Level 2

També adds a positive parallel; tampoc adds a negative parallel.

How It Works

Use també to include another person, thing or action in a positive statement: jo també vinc. Use tampoc when the added statement is negative: jo tampoc vinc. The two words are not interchangeable translations of English either.

Before the verb, tampoc can appear with optional no: ella tampoc (no) ho sap. After the verb, the normal negative pattern includes preverbal no: ella no ho sap tampoc. A short reply can be simply jo també or jo tampoc.

Place the adverb where its scope is clear. També compro pa can add buying bread to another action, while compro pa també can add bread to another purchase in the right context. Intonation and the preceding exchange help identify the intended parallel.

  2. Ell no té cotxe i jo tampoc.

He does not have a car, and neither do I.

  3. Nosaltres tampoc no ho sabem.

We do not know it either.
