hola, bon dia, bona tarda

Neutral Greetings

Level 1

Hola is a general greeting; bon dia, bona tarda and bona nit fit the time of day.

How It Works

Hola works in many everyday encounters. Bon dia is the usual morning greeting, while bona tarda is used after midday in varieties that distinguish it. Bona nit can greet someone in the evening or wish them a good night when leaving.

The boundaries between greetings vary with local habits; they are not fixed grammatical clock times. In Valencian usage, bon dia and bona vesprada are common choices. Learn the greeting heard in your setting without calling another regional formula incorrect.

Match the adjective to the noun inside each expression: bon dia but bona tarda and bona nit. For leaving, adeu is a general farewell; fins demà names the next day and fins aviat hopes for another meeting soon.
