La marks feminine singular nouns; les marks feminine plural nouns.
How It Works
Use la for an identified feminine noun: la porta. For more than one, use les and make the noun plural: les portes. Learn gender with the word; la mà and la flor are feminine despite not ending in -a.
La normally becomes l’ before a vowel or silent h, but stays before unstressed i/u: l'ombra, la història. Les never elides, including in les amigues.
Prepositions a, de and per remain separate before la/les: a la cuina, de les cases, per les places. An adjective in the same phrase agrees too: les portes blanques.
