Contractions With Ordinary Articles but Not Title Articles
Ordinary articles contract; an article belonging to a publication title remains part of that title.
How It Works
Del Govern and al Parlament combine a preposition with an ordinary article, despite the capital letter on the institutional noun. Catalan place-name articles likewise normally contract: del Vendrell. Capitalization alone therefore cannot decide whether contraction is blocked.
An article forming part of a title, such as El Temps, is preserved: un article d'El Temps. De itself elides before the title's vowel-initial El, while the title article remains intact. With a, an expression such as publicat a El Temps likewise preserves the title.
Identify whether the article is part of the cited title or simply introduces a noun. Keep official title spelling and typography consistent, but do not let quotation marks or italics erase ordinary apostrophe rules.
