Sounds That Change Inside Words

Foundations

This is why ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။ (thank you) is said chay-zu tin-ba-deh, with ba and deh.

How It Works

Burmese spelling shows each syllable as if it stood alone. In real speech, the consonant of a later syllable softens when a vowel or a nasal sound comes right before it.

WrittenAloneInside a word
က, ခkg
စ, ဆsz
တ, ထtd
ပ, ဖpb
ကျ, ချchj

So in မိန်းကလေး (girl), the ကလေး part is said ga-lay: mein-ga-lay. The endings soften too: ပါ is ba and တယ် is deh after a vowel.

After a stopped syllable, the sound stays hard: အိပ်ခန်း (bedroom) is eik-khan. A few words keep their hard sound, and the audio in each lesson shows them.

Examples (5)

  1. မင်္ဂလာပါ။

    Hello.

ပါ comes after a vowel, so it is said ba: min-ga-la-ba.

  2. ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။

    Thank you.

ပါ after the nasal of တင် is ba, and တယ် after a vowel is deh.

  3. နေကောင်းလား။

    How are you?

ကောင်း comes after the vowel of နေ, so it is said gaung.

  4. မိန်းကလေး

    girl

ကလေး is said ga-lay after the nasal sound of မိန်း.

  5. ရေကန်

    lake

ကန် is said gan after the vowel of ရေ.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the soft sound with a different letter.

    မိန်းဂလေး
    မိန်းကလေး

The spelling always keeps က. Only the sound changes, so write the word as it is in the dictionary.
