отколкото

Than with a Clause

Level 3Sounds Like otkolkoto

Use отколкото for than before a clause: По-лесно е, отколкото мислех. Before a plain noun or pronoun, the usual word is от: по-висок от мен.

How It Works

1. Before a clause. When the second half of the comparison has its own verb, use отколкото:

  • По-лесно е, отколкото мислех. (It is easier than I thought.)
  • Филмът беше по-интересен, отколкото очаквах. (The film was more interesting than I expected.)
  • Повече работи, отколкото почива. (He works more than he rests.)

2. Before a да-clause: rather than. Предпочитам да ходя пеша, отколкото да чакам автобуса. (I prefer walking to waiting for the bus.)

3. Before adverbs and phrases. По-добре късно, отколкото никога. (Better late than never.) A phrase that keeps its own preposition also takes отколкото, because a verb is understood: Помагам на Иван повече, отколкото на Петър. (I help Ivan more than I help Petar.)

4. От or отколкото?

  • Plain noun or pronoun → usually от: Иван е по-висок от Петър. Работя повече от теб.
  • Clause, да-clause, adverb or a phrase with its own preposition → отколкото.

5. Punctuation. A comma comes before отколкото, as in all the examples above.

To say as ... as, use толкова ... колкото instead.

    По-лесно е от мислех.

От is used before a noun or pronoun, not before a clause. When the second half of the comparison has its own verb, use отколкото.

  • Leaving out the comma before отколкото.

    По-лесно е отколкото мислех.
    По-лесно е, отколкото мислех.

A clause introduced by отколкото is separated from the main clause by a comma.
