Unless
Освен ако means "unless": it names the only thing that would change the outcome. (I will come unless it rains.)
How It Works
1. Meaning. Освен ако introduces the one condition that would stop or change the main action:
- Ще дойда, освен ако не вали. (I will come unless it rains.)
(Nobody gets in unless they are invited.)
2. The extra не. The не after освен ако is an expletive не: it does not negate anything. It is optional, and the sentence means the same with or without it:
- Ще купя кроасани, освен ако не искаш нещо друго.
- Ще купя кроасани, освен ако искаш нещо друго.
Both mean "I will buy croissants unless you want something else." With имам or има, the clearer choice is to leave не out, because не + имам becomes нямам, which reads as a real negation: освен ако имаш други планове (unless you have other plans).
3. Tense. As after ако, use the present for a future event, not ще: освен ако не завали, never освен ако не ще завали.
4. Similar words.
- стига да: the condition that is enough (provided that).
- дори и да: a condition that changes nothing (even if).
- в случай че: preparing for a possibility (in case).
- освен че: "besides the fact that", with no condition at all.
Punctuation: put a comma before освен ако.
Examples (5)
I'll come unless it rains.
The не does not negate: the meaning is "unless it rains".
I won't call you unless something important happens.
Don't drink this water unless it has been boiled.
We'll leave at eight unless you have other plans.
With имаш, the optional не is left out.
Nobody gets in unless they are invited.
