няма какво да

Nothing to with Няма Какво Да

Level 4Sounds Like nâma kakvo da

To say "there is nothing to ...", use няма какво да + verb: Няма какво да правим. (There is nothing we can do.) A preposition goes before какво: Няма от какво да се страхуваш. (There is nothing to be afraid of.)

How It Works

1. The basic pattern. Няма (there is not) + question word + да + verb:

  • Няма какво да правим. (There is nothing we can do.)
  • Няма кой да ми помогне. (There is no one to help me.)
  • Няма къде да седнем. (There is nowhere to sit.)

The verb after да shows who would do the action: да правим (we), да правиш (you).

2. With a person: нямам какво да. To say that a person has nothing to do something with, use нямам: Нямам какво да облека! (I have nothing to wear!) Нямаме какво да губим. (We have nothing to lose.)

3. Prepositions go first. Bulgarian never leaves a preposition at the end of the sentence. It moves in front of the question word:

  • Няма от какво да се страхуваш. (There is nothing to be afraid of.)
  • Няма за какво да се тревожиш. (There is nothing to worry about.)
  • Нямам с кого да говоря. (I have no one to talk to.)

4. Other tenses. Change only няма: Нямаше какво да ядем. (There was nothing to eat.) Няма да има какво да правим. (There will be nothing to do.) See past and future of има.

5. The positive version. Има какво да means there is something, often plenty, to do: В София има какво да се види. (There is a lot to see in Sofia.)

Set phrases: Няма защо. (You're welcome, literally "there is no reason".) Няма какво да се прави. (Nothing can be done.) For "no one", "nothing" with an ordinary verb, see negative words with не.

Examples (6)

  1. Няма какво да правим, ще чакаме.

There's nothing we can do; we'll wait.

  2. Няма от какво да се страхуваш.

There's nothing to be afraid of.

The preposition от goes before какво.

  3. Нямам какво да облека!

    I have nothing to wear!

    With a person, use нямам.

  4. В хладилника нямаше какво да ядем.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the preposition at the end.

Няма какво да се страхуваш от.
Няма от какво да се страхуваш.

Bulgarian does not end a clause with a preposition. Put it in front of the question word: от какво.

  • Leaving out да.

    Няма какво правим.
    Няма какво да правим.

The verb in this pattern must be introduced by да.
