Place or Time + където/когато
Relative Където and Когато
Use където after a place and когато after a time to describe it: къщата, където съм роден (the house where I was born), денят, когато се запознахме (the day when we met).
How It Works
1. Describing a place. After a noun for a place, където starts a clause that tells you more about it:
- Това е градът, където живея. (This is the city where I live.)
- Ресторантът, където вечеряхме, е наблизо. (The restaurant where we had dinner is nearby.)
If the place is where someone comes from, use откъдето: селото, откъдето е баба ми (the village my grandmother comes from).
2. Describing a time. After a noun for a time, such as ден, година, момент or лято, use когато:
- Помня деня, когато се запознахме. (I remember the day when we met.)
- Това беше годината, когато завърших. (That was the year when I graduated.)
3. The same meaning with който. Both clauses can be rewritten with в and a form of който that agrees with the noun: градът, в който живея; годината, в която завърших. Both versions are correct and common.
4. Там, където. The clause can also follow там (there) or тогава (then) instead of a noun: Седни там, където искаш. (Sit where you like.)
5. Question word or relative word? Къде and кога ask questions. When the clause describes a noun, always add -то: градът, където, never градът, къде. On its own, когато also means 'when' in time clauses (see when clauses).
6. Commas. Bulgarian always puts a comma before the clause, and another one after it if the sentence continues: Градът, където живея, е малък. See commas before subordinate clauses.
Examples (6)
- Това е градът, където живея.
This is the city where I live.
- Никога няма да забравя деня, когато се запознахме.
I will never forget the day when we met.
- Къщата, където съм роден, вече я няма.
The house where I was born is no longer there.
The clause sits between commas because the sentence continues after it.
- Помниш ли лятото, когато ходихме на море?
Do you remember the summer when we went to the seaside?
- Седни там, където искаш.
Sit wherever you like.
Където can also follow там instead of a noun.
- Това е селото, откъдето е баба ми.
This is the village my grandmother comes from.
Откъдето is the form for 'where from'.
Common Mistakes
Using the question word къде to start a describing clause.
Това е градът, къде живея.Това е градът, където живея.Къде only asks a question. A clause that describes a place needs the relative form където.
Using the question word кога after a noun for a time.
Помня деня, кога се запознахме.Помня деня, когато се запознахме.Кога only asks a question. After a noun for a time, use когато.
Leaving out the commas around the clause.
Градът където живея е малък.Градът, където живея, е малък.Bulgarian requires a comma before a describing clause and another comma after it when the sentence goes on.
