Not at All with Хич

Put хич before не to say "not at all": Хич не ме интересува. (It doesn't interest me at all.)

How It Works

1. The shape. Хич + не + verb:

  • Хич не ме интересува. (It doesn't interest me at all.)
  • Хич не е лесно. (It isn't easy at all.)
  • Хич не ми се спи. (I'm not sleepy at all.)

2. Negation in the not-at-all use. Here хич appears with не or another negative word. In a separate rhetorical or reproachful use, хич can appear without negation, as in Хич бива ли!. The negative can also be няма, as in the idiom хич ме няма (I'm hopeless): Хич ме няма в математиката. (I'm hopeless at maths.)

3. Even stronger. Speakers add даже for extra force: Хич даже не ми мина през ума. (It never even crossed my mind.)

4. Register. Хич is colloquial. In neutral speech and in writing, use никак or изобщо: Никак не е лесно. Изобщо не ме интересува. Compare other emphatic negatives such as нито and никой and нищо with не.

Common Mistakes

  • Using хич without a negation.

    Хич ме интересува какво мисли.
    Хич не ме интересува какво мисли.

    Хич only strengthens a negation. Without не, the sentence has no negative meaning to strengthen.

  • Putting не before хич.

    Не хич ме интересува.
    Хич не ме интересува.

    Хич comes before не, not after it.
