Bulgarian shows the direction of movement with a prefix: влизам (go in), излизам (go out), пристигам (arrive), заминавам (leave for a trip).

How It Works

1. Common pairs (imperfective / perfective), each with its usual preposition:

  • влизам / вляза (go in, come in) + в: влизам в стаята
  • излизам / изляза (go out) + от: излизам от къщата
  • минавам / мина (pass, go through, drop by) + през, покрай: минавам през парка
  • пристигам / пристигна (arrive) + в, на: пристигам в София
  • заминавам / замина (leave on a trip) + за: заминавам за Варна
  • слизам / сляза (go down, get off) + от: слизам от автобуса
  • качвам се / кача се (go up, get on) + на, в: качвам се на влака
  • прибирам се / прибера се (go back home): прибирам се вкъщи

2. Choosing the aspect. The imperfective describes habits and actions in progress: Всяка сутрин излизам в осем. (Every morning I leave at eight.) The perfective describes one complete movement, usually in the past, after да or after ще: Влакът пристигна навреме. (The train arrived on time.) See aspect pairs formed with a prefix.

3. Forms to watch. The perfectives вляза, изляза, сляза change я to е in some forms: влязох (I went in) but влезе (he went in), and the imperatives are влез!, излез!, слез!.

4. Заминавам versus отивам. Заминавам means leaving for another town or country for some time. For an ordinary "go", use отивам: Отивам на работа. (I'm going to work.)

    Заминавам takes за for the destination.

    Get off the bus at the third stop.

Common Mistakes

  • Using в with заминавам for the destination.

    Утре заминавам във Варна.
    Утре заминавам за Варна.

    With a town or country as the destination, заминавам takes за: заминавам за Варна, заминавам за Италия.

  • Leaving out the preposition after излизам.

    Излизам къщата в осем.
    Излизам от къщата в осем.

    Излизам needs от before the place you leave.

  • Using the perfective for a regular habit.

    Влакът всеки ден пристигна в осем.
    Влакът всеки ден пристига в осем.

    Всеки ден describes a repeated action, so the imperfective пристига is needed.
