koji

Which

Level 2

Koji means which. It changes its ending to match the gender of the noun.

How It Works

singularplural
masculinekojikoji
femininekojakoje
neuterkojekoja

Koji asks which one out of several things you can see or imagine: Koji autobus ide u Zenicu? It always agrees with the noun it asks about.

It works in other cases too. As an object, the feminine koja ends in -u: Koju kafu želiš? The masculine and neuter forms look the same as in the nominative when the thing has no life.

Do not mix it up with šta (what) and ko (who). Use šta when you ask about anything, and koji when you choose from a group.

At Level 4 you will also meet koji as a word that joins sentences, as in "the man who works here".

Examples (5)

  1. Koji autobus ide u Zenicu?

    Which bus goes to Zenica?

Autobus is masculine, so the word is koji.

  2. Koja je tvoja torba?

    Which bag is yours?

Torba is feminine, so the word is koja.

  3. Koje voće voliš?

    Which fruit do you like?

Voće is neuter, so the word is koje.

  4. Koju kafu želiš?

    Which coffee do you want?

Kafu is the object, so koja becomes koju.

  5. Koji su tvoji prijatelji?

    Which ones are your friends?

    Koji is the masculine plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    Koji torba?
    Koja torba?

Koji must match the gender of the noun.

  • Not changing koja when it is the object.

    Koja kafu želiš?
    Koju kafu želiš?

Koja and kafa both change to -u.
