आज / काल्ह / अबहीं
Today, Tomorrow and Right Now
आज is today, अबहीं is right now, and काल्ह is the day before or the day after today.
How It Works
Bhojpuri uses one word, काल्ह, for both yesterday and tomorrow. This is common in the languages of the Hindi belt, and it rarely causes confusion.
| Word | Meaning | Verb that goes with it |
|---|---|---|
| आज | today | any |
| काल्ह | yesterday | past: हम काल्ह घरे रहनी। |
| काल्ह | tomorrow | future: हम काल्ह जाइब। |
| अबहीं | right now, just now | usually -त बा |
अबहीं is अब (now) plus the sharpening -हीं, so it means right now and not later. Use आज and अबहीं freely at Level 1; save the past and future verbs for when you reach those lessons.
To say the day after tomorrow or the day before yesterday, speakers use परसों, but at first काल्ह and आज will carry you through most talk.
