Ён такі прыйшоў. He did come after all. The particle такі says it happened despite doubts or obstacles.

How It Works

Besides the pronoun такі (such), Belarusian has a colloquial particle такі. Next to a verb it means after all, in the end, despite everything:

  • Ён такі прыйшоў. He did come after all.
  • Я такі мела рацыю. I was right after all (said by a woman).

It never changes. The particle stays такі for every subject: ён такі прыйшоў, яна такі прыйшла, яны такі прыйшлі. If you make it agree, you get the pronoun instead: Яна такая прыйшла means She came in such a state.

Spelling. The 2008 rules give a simple test:

  • Before the verb, write it separately: Ён такі даказаў сваё.
  • After the verb, use a hyphen: Даказаў-такі сваё.
  • In fixed words, also a hyphen: усё-такі (still, all the same), зноў-такі (again, once more), так-такі, даволі-такі (rather).
  • After усё ж it is separate: Ён усё ж такі прыедзе.

Meaning and tone. Такі sounds conversational and often a little satisfied or relieved. In neutral or written style, use усё-такі or усё ж. To add a contrast between two clauses, use аднак or нягледзячы на.

  5. Даказаў-такі сваё!

    He proved his point in the end!

    Word by Word: Proved after-all his-own!

Common Mistakes

  • Making the particle agree like the pronoun.

    Яна такая прыйшла.
    Яна такі прыйшла.

    The intended meaning is She came after all. The particle never changes; такая is the pronoun and means she came in such a state.

  • Writing the particle after the verb without a hyphen.

    Ён прыйшоў такі.
    Ён прыйшоў-такі.

    After a verb, the particle is joined with a hyphen. Before the verb it is separate: Ён такі прыйшоў.

  • Spelling усё-такі the Russian way.

    Мы усё-таки паспелі.
    Мы ўсё-такі паспелі.

    Belarusian writes такі with і. Also remember ў after a vowel: мы ўсё-такі.
