To name a topic, use наконт or адносна + genitive: Я пішу наконт заўтрашняй сустрэчы. (I am writing about tomorrow's meeting.)

How It Works

Наконт and адносна introduce the topic that a question, opinion, request or decision is about. Both take the genitive.

  • наконт: neutral, fine in conversation and in letters. У мяне ёсць пытанне наконт хатняга задання. (I have a question about the homework.) The phrase А што наконт...? means And what about...?
  • адносна: more bookish, typical of documents. Адносна будаўніцтва пакуль нічога не вырашылі. (Nothing has been decided yet about the construction.)

Spelling. Наконт grew from на + конт and is now written as one word.

Адносна as an adverb. Without a genitive noun, адносна means relatively: Кватэра тут адносна танная. (The flat here is relatively cheap.) Context makes the meaning clear.

Plain alternatives. For telling, writing or thinking about something, everyday Belarusian often uses пра with the accusative or, in writing, аб with the locative: Я пішу пра сустрэчу. Наконт and адносна are best when the topic is a matter to be settled or discussed.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing наконт as two words.

    Я пішу на конт заўтрашняй сустрэчы.
    Я пішу наконт заўтрашняй сустрэчы.

    The preposition наконт is spelled as one word, like замест.

  • Using the accusative after наконт, as with пра.

    Я пішу наконт заўтрашнюю сустрэчу.
    Я пішу наконт заўтрашняй сустрэчы.

    Пра takes the accusative, but наконт and адносна take the genitive.

  • Adding да after адносна.

    Адносна да будаўніцтва пакуль нічога не вырашылі.
    Адносна будаўніцтва пакуль нічога не вырашылі.

    Адносна is followed directly by the genitive, with no extra preposition.
