хварэць на + Accusative
Being Ill with Хварэць На
хварэць на + accusative = to be ill with: Ён хварэе на грып. (He has the flu.)
How It Works
Naming the illness. After хварэць (to be ill), put на and the illness in the accusative:
- Ён хварэе на грып. (He has the flu.)
- Яна хварэла на ангіну. (She had tonsillitis.)
- Бацька даўно хварэе на сэрца. (Father has had heart trouble for a long time.)
Masculine and neuter nouns look the same as in the dictionary (на грып, на сэрца). Feminine nouns in -а change to -у or -ю (на ангіну). See the feminine accusative.
Asking. На што ты хварэеш? (What are you ill with?)
Other forms of the verb. The perfective захварэць на means to fall ill: Уся сям'я захварэла на грып. (The whole family came down with the flu.) Перахварэць на means to have had an illness and got over it.
Хварэць or баліць? Хварэць says that a person is ill. To say that a body part hurts, use баліць: У мяне баліць галава. (I have a headache.)
Other patterns. Dictionaries also list хварэць чым, but на with the accusative is the everyday way to name an illness. Хварэць за means something else: to worry about, or to cheer for a team: Я хварэю за нашу каманду.
