у мяне баліць

Saying What Hurts

Level 2Sounds Like u mâne balícʹ

У + person + баліць / баляць + body part: У мяне баліць галава (I have a headache), У яго баляць ногі (His legs hurt).

How It Works

The pattern is the same as у мяне ёсць: у + person in the genitive + verb + subject.

  • У мяне баліць галава. (I have a headache. Literally "At me hurts the head.")
  • У яго баляць ногі. (His legs hurt.)
  • Што ў цябе баліць? (What hurts?)

The person: у мяне, у цябе, у яго, у яе, у нас, у вас, у іх (no н- is added: see pronoun forms); a noun takes its genitive ending: у мамы, у дачкі, у брата.

One or several. Балець is a second-conjugation verb, and it agrees with the body part: баліць галава, зуб, горла but баляць ногі, зубы, вочы.

In the past the verb agrees in gender and number (see feminine and plural past tense): балеў зуб (masculine), балела галава (feminine), балела горла (neuter), балелі ногі (plural).

Useful body words: галава (head), горла (throat), зуб (tooth), жывот (stomach), спіна (back), нага, ногі (leg, legs), вуха (ear).

You may also hear the person in the dative (яму балела), especially in literature, but у мяне баліць is the everyday pattern.

Common Mistakes

  • Making the person the subject.

    Я баліць галава.
    У мяне баліць галава.

The body part is the subject. The person comes with у + genitive: у мяне.

  • Using баліць with a plural body part.

    У мяне баліць ногі.
    У мяне баляць ногі.

The verb agrees with the body part. Ногі is plural, so the verb is баляць.

  • Using the wrong gender in the past.

    Учора ў мяне балела зуб.
    Учора ў мяне балеў зуб.

Зуб is masculine, so the past tense ends in -ў: балеў.
