Гэта Versus Гэты

Гэта мой дом = This is my house. Гэты дом мой = This house is mine. Гэта presents something; гэты picks out a noun.

How It Works

1. Гэта: this is, it is. It introduces or names something, and the present tense needs no verb (see no present-tense is): Гэта мой дом, Гэта мая сястра, Гэта мае сябры. It stays the same with every gender and number. See identifying with гэта.

2. Гэты: this, pointing at a noun. It agrees in gender, number and case: гэты дом, гэтая сукенка, гэтае акно, гэтыя кветкі. The sentence then says something about that noun: Гэты дом мой (This house is mine), Гэтая сукенка вельмі прыгожая (This dress is very pretty). See гэты and той.

3. A quick test. If you can say this is or it is in English, use гэта. If this is followed by a noun it describes, use гэты in the matching form.

4. A note on writing. Dictionaries also list гэта as a short feminine and neuter form of гэты, so in books гэта кніга can mean this book. In your own speech, use гэтая and гэтае for this and keep гэта for this is. With masculine and plural nouns there is no overlap at all.

    Гэтыя agrees with plural кветкі.

Common Mistakes

  • Using гэты when you mean This is my brother.

    Гэты мой брат.
    Гэта мой брат.

    Гэты мой брат is only a phrase, this brother of mine, not a full sentence. To introduce someone, use unchanging гэта.

  • Using гэта when you mean This house is big.

    Гэта дом вялікі.
    Гэты дом вялікі.

    When this describes a masculine noun, use гэты. Гэта дом means this is a house.

  • Making гэта plural when you mean These are my friends.

    Гэтыя мае сябры.
    Гэта мае сябры.

    Гэтыя мае сябры is only a phrase, these friends of mine, not a full sentence. To say these are, use unchanging гэта.
