добры дзень
Hello and Time-of-Day Greetings
Добры дзень! is the safe hello for almost any situation. In the morning say Добрай раніцы!, and in the evening say Добры вечар!
How It Works
- Добры дзень: good day, hello. You will also hear Дзень добры.
- Добрай раніцы: good morning. It is a wish, so the words stand in the genitive case, like "(I wish you) a good morning". You may also hear добрага ранку.
- Добры вечар: good evening.
- Дабранач: good night, written as one word.
Learn them as fixed phrases. Добры agrees with the masculine words дзень and вечар, and раніца (morning) is feminine. See прыметнік: род і лік.
Two spelling points: the adjective ends in -ы with no й (добры, not Russian добрый), and д before е turns into дз (дзень, not день). See цеканне і дзеканне.
To be extra polite, add the person's name, or the name and patronymic: Добры дзень, Ганна Іванаўна! See спадар і спадарыня for more polite address.
