Чый asks whose. It changes to match the thing owned: Чыя гэта кніга? (Whose book is this?), Чые гэта рэчы? (Whose things are these?)

How It Works

1. The four forms.

  • Чый гэта тэлефон? (Whose phone is this?)
  • Чыя гэта кніга? (Whose book is this?)
  • Чыё гэта паліто? (Whose coat is this?)
  • Чые гэта рэчы? (Whose things are these?)

2. Answering. Use мой, твой, наш, ваш, which also agree with the thing: — Чыя гэта сумка? — Мая. Or use яго, яе, іх, which never change: Гэта яе кніга. You can also name the owner in the genitive: Гэта кніга брата (It is my brother's book).

3. Other cases. Чый changes for case like an adjective: чыйго (masculine genitive), чыю (feminine accusative), чыім (instrumental): Чыю сумку ты ўзяў? (Whose bag did you take?). The common phrase на чыю карысць means in whose favor.

Tip: the ё in чыё and the е in чые show that the stem is soft, like маё and мае.

    Accusative чыю, matching the object сумку.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    Чый гэта кніга?
    Чыя гэта кніга?

    Чый agrees with the thing owned. Кніга is feminine, so the form is чыя.

  • Using a singular form with a plural noun.

    Чыя гэта рэчы?
    Чые гэта рэчы?

    Рэчы is plural, so the form is чые.

  • Matching чый to a female owner instead of the thing owned.

    Чыя гэта тэлефон?
    Чый гэта тэлефон?

    Even if you think the owner is a woman, тэлефон is masculine, so the question is чый.
