Dropping the Subject Pronoun
The ending tells you who is acting, so the pronoun is often dropped: Жыву ў Мінску. (I live in Minsk.) Што робіце? (What are you doing?)
How It Works
In English you must say "I" or "you". In Belarusian the verb ending already carries that information, so the pronoun is often not needed.
Where the pronoun is usually dropped:
- in questions and short answers: — Ведаеш Алеся? — Ведаю. (Do you know Ales? I do.)
- in everyday statements about yourself: Жыву ў Мінску, працую ў школе. (I live in Minsk and work at a school.)
- in friendly questions: Чаму маўчыш? (Why are you so quiet?)
Where you keep it:
- for contrast or emphasis: Я чытаю, а ты пішаш. (I am reading, and you are writing.)
- with ён, яна, яно and яны, unless it is already clear who you mean. Чытае only tells you "someone reads".
- in the past tense. The past does not show person, only gender and number: чытаў can be "I", "you" or "he read". So Belarusians normally say я чытаў, ты чытаў. See the masculine past tense.
Leaving the pronoun in is never wrong, and Belarusians use it very often. What matters is that the ending matches the person you mean: я -у/-ю, ты -еш/-іш, мы -ем/-ім, вы -еце/-іце.

The pronouns stay because the two people are contrasted.
Common Mistakes
Using the ён/яна ending when you mean "I live in Minsk" without я.
Жыве ў Мінску.Жыву ў Мінску.Without я, only the ending shows the person. Жыве means "he or she lives"; "I live" is жыву.
Keeping the pronoun but not matching the ending to it.
Мы жыве ў Мінску.Мы жывём у Мінску.The pronoun does not replace the ending. With мы the verb needs the мы ending: жывём.
