Focus with Якраз and Менавіта
How It Works
Like толькі and нават, these words stand before the word they focus on.
Менавіта means precisely, exactly this and not something else:
(I need this particular book, not that one.)
(That is exactly why I came.)
Notice the small і before the verb in these sentences. It echoes the focus: (That is exactly what I wanted to say.)
А менавіта means namely. It introduces a list or detail and is set off with a comma:
Якраз is one word and has several everyday uses:
- time: just then, just now: (I was just about to call you.)
- place or amount: exactly, right: якраз насупраць школы (right opposite the school), якраз своечасова (just in time)
- fit: just right: Гэтыя чаравікі мне якраз. (These shoes fit me just right.)
(That is exactly what worries me.)
For emphasis on the whole statement, Belarusian also uses ж and жа. For strong identification of a person, see не хто іншы, як.
