zenbat eta ... orduan eta
The More ... the More
Zenbat eta + comparative, then orduan eta + comparative: Zenbat eta lehenago hasi, orduan eta hobe. (The sooner we start, the better.)
How It Works
The pattern.
- First half: zenbat eta + a comparative + verb
- Second half: orduan eta + comparative + verb
Comparative words. Use gehiago (more) and gutxiago (less) with verbs and nouns, and -ago with adjectives and adverbs: errazago, goizago, azkarrago. The irregular forms hobe and okerrago also work.
The first verb. Use either:
- a bare participle, with the tense understood: Zenbat eta goizago jaiki, orduan eta denbora gehiago izango duzu.
- a full verb with the relative -(e)n: Zenbat eta gehiago dakizun, orduan eta galdera gehiago dituzu.
The second half can drop its verb in short sayings: Zenbat eta lehenago, orduan eta hobe. (The sooner, the better.)
Other forms. orduan eta comes from the Southern tradition. hainbat eta can replace it, especially in writing, and Northern writers also use zenbatenaz ... hainbatenaz. For a steady change over time with one clause, use gero eta -ago: gero eta hobeto (better and better).
