gero eta -ago

More and More

Level 3

gero eta + a comparative means more and more: gero eta handiagoa (bigger and bigger), gero eta gehiago (more and more), gero eta gutxiago (less and less).

How It Works

1. How to build it. Make the comparative with -ago and put gero eta in front: handi → handiago → gero eta handiago.

2. With izan. An adjective after da or dira keeps its article, as in describing with izan: Gero eta garestiagoa da. (It is getting more and more expensive.) Gero eta garestiagoak dira. (They are getting more and more expensive.)

3. With adverbs. Adverbs take -ago without an article: gero eta azkarrago (faster and faster), gero eta hobeto (better and better). Remember the irregular forms hobeto, gehiago and gutxiago.

4. With nouns and verbs. Use gehiago or gutxiago after the noun: Gero eta jende gehiago etortzen da. (More and more people come.) Gero eta denbora gutxiago daukat. (I have less and less time.) With a verb alone: Gero eta gehiago ikasten dut. (I study more and more.)

5. Inside a noun phrase. gero eta can come before the noun or before the adjective: Gero eta auto garestiagoak erosten ditu. or Auto gero eta garestiagoak erosten ditu. (He buys more and more expensive cars.)

Tip: To link two changes, "the more ..., the more ...", use zenbat eta ... orduan eta.

Examples (5)

  1. Gero eta hobeto hitz egiten duzu.

    You speak better and better.

hobeto is the comparative of ondo (well).

  2. Bizitza gero eta garestiagoa da.

Life is getting more and more expensive.

garesti → garestiago → garestiagoa after da.

  3. Gero eta jende gehiago etortzen da.

    More and more people come.

With a noun, use gehiago after it. jende takes a singular verb.

  4. Gero eta hotzago egiten du.

It is getting colder and colder.

hotz egin is used for cold weather.

  5. Gero eta denbora gutxiago daukat.

    gutxiago gives "less and less".

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the -ago ending.

    Gero eta garestia da.
    Gero eta garestiagoa da.

gero eta always needs a comparative. Add -ago before the article: garestiagoa.

  • Using gehiago with an adjective, as in English "more expensive".

    Gero eta gehiago garestia da.
    Gero eta garestiagoa da.

Adjectives and adverbs take -ago. gehiago is used with nouns and verbs: gero eta jende gehiago.
