zaizkit

Several Things Happening to Someone

Level 2

When several things happen to someone, put -zki- into the auxiliary: zait → zaizkit, zaizu → zaizkizu, zaio → zaizkio.

How It Works

The forms.

  • niri ... zaizkit
  • zuri ... zaizkizu
  • hari ... zaizkio
  • guri ... zaizkigu
  • zuei ... zaizkizue
  • haiei ... zaizkie

What -zki- counts. Use these forms when the subject is plural: a noun with -ak, a number above one, or a word like asko: Giltzak galdu zaizkit, Bi euro falta zaizkit (I am two euros short), Gauza asko ahaztu zaizkigu.

What -zki- does not count. The number of people affected is shown only by the ending. If several people like one thing, there is no -zki-: Guri kafea gustatzen zaigu (We like coffee). If several people like several things, both change: Umeei ez zaizkie barazkiak gustatzen (Children do not like vegetables).

Same verbs as zait. Everything that takes zait takes these forms with a plural subject, including gustatu and iruditu and falta: Zure lagunak oso jatorrak iruditzen zaizkit (Your friends seem very nice to me). The past forms are zitzaizkidan, zitzaizkion and so on.

Examples (6)

  1. Giltzak galdu zaizkit.

    I have lost my keys.

giltzak is plural, so -zki- goes into zait.

  2. Liburu hauek gustatzen zaizkio.

    She likes these books.

  3. Gauza asko ahaztu zaizkigu.

We have forgotten a lot of things.

  4. Umeei ez zaizkie barazkiak gustatzen.

    Children do not like vegetables.

Plural people (-e) and plural things (-zki-) both show in the verb: zaizkie.

  5. Bi euro falta zaizkit.

    I am two euros short.

  6. Zure lagunak oso jatorrak iruditzen zaizkit.

Your friends seem very nice to me.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting -zki- with a plural subject.

    Liburuak gustatzen zait.
    Liburuak gustatzen zaizkit.

liburuak is plural, so the auxiliary needs -zki-: zaizkit.

  • Adding -zki- because the people are plural.

    Guri kafea gustatzen zaizkigu.
    Guri kafea gustatzen zaigu.

Coffee is one thing, so there is no -zki-. The plural people are shown by the ending -gu alone.
