zitzaidan
Past of Zait
The past of zait starts with zitzai- and ends in -n: zitzaidan (to me), zitzaizun (to you), zitzaion (to him or her), zitzaigun, zitzaizuen, zitzaien.
How It Works
The forms. The middle part says to whom it happens.
- niri: zitzaidan (plural: zitzaizkidan)
- zuri: zitzaizun (zitzaizkizun)
- hari: zitzaion (zitzaizkion)
- guri: zitzaigun (zitzaizkigun)
- zuei: zitzaizuen (zitzaizkizuen)
- haiei: zitzaien (zitzaizkien)
The person it happens to takes the dative -(r)i, not the ergative: Niri filma gustatu zitzaidan, never nik.
What it is for. These are the past forms of Happening to Someone. They go with verbs like gustatu (to like), gertatu (to happen), ahaztu (to slip someone's mind) and erori (to fall from someone): Giltza ahaztu zitzaidan (I forgot the key), Zer gertatu zitzaizun? (What happened to you?).
A note on ahaztu. ahaztu can also take dut: Giltza ahaztu nuen means the same thing and is just as correct. With zitzaidan, the key is the subject and the forgetting simply happens to you.
Plural subject. When the thing liked or forgotten is plural, add -zki-, as in the present: Barazkiak ez zitzaizkidan gustatzen (I didn't like vegetables).
Used to. With the -tzen form it describes a past habit: Txikitan ez zitzaizkidan barazkiak gustatzen. See Used To.

The children didn't like the story.
umeei is plural, so the form is zitzaien.

As a child I didn't like vegetables.
barazkiak is plural, so -zki- is added.
Common Mistakes
Using a dut form with gustatu.
Filma asko gustatu nuen.Filma asko gustatu zitzaidan.gustatu works like zait: the film is pleasing to me. Its past is zitzaidan, not nuen.
Forgetting -zki- with a plural subject.
Barazkiak ez zitzaidan gustatzen.Barazkiak ez zitzaizkidan gustatzen.barazkiak is plural, so the verb adds -zki-: zitzaizkidan.
Using the singular form for several people.
Umeei ez zitzaion ipuina gustatu.Umeei ez zitzaien ipuina gustatu.zitzaion is to him or her; to them is zitzaien.
