iruditzen zait / falta zait / axola zait
More Verbs Like Gustatzen Zait
Ondo iruditzen zait. (It seems fine to me.) Euro bat falta zait. (I am one euro short.) Ez zait axola. (I don't mind.)
How It Works
The same shape as liking. In gustatzen zait, the person who likes something takes the dative -(r)i and the thing is the subject. Three more common verbs work the same way, with the zait forms.
iruditu: to seem to someone. This is how you give an opinion:
- Zer iruditzen zaizu? (What do you think? Literally: What does it seem to you?)
- Ondo iruditzen zait. (It seems fine to me.)
- With an adjective, the adjective takes the article: Garestia iruditzen zait. (It seems expensive to me.)
- With a whole clause in -(e)la: Berandu dela iruditzen zait. (I think it is late.)
falta izan: to be missing. The missing thing is the subject: Euro bat falta zait (I am one euro short; literally one euro is missing to me). Without a person, it just says something is missing or left: Ogia falta da (There is no bread), Bost minutu falta dira (Five minutes to go).
axola izan: to matter. Ez zait axola means I don't mind or It doesn't matter to me. This verb is flexible: Euskaltzaindia accepts ez da axola, ez zait axola, zer axola du? and ez dit axola, so you will hear all of them.
Agreement. When the thing is plural, use the plural forms from nor-nori plural subject: zaizkit: Zapata hauek garestiak iruditzen zaizkit, Bi euro falta zaizkit. A number above one counts as plural.

These shoes seem expensive to me.
The subject zapata hauek is plural, so the verb is zaizkit.

A -(e)la clause can be the thing that seems.
- Euro bat falta zait.

Mum is two euros short.
amari is the person; bi euro is plural, so the verb is zaizkio.

Common Mistakes
Treating iruditu like a normal verb with a -k doer.
Nik ondo iruditzen dut.Niri ondo iruditzen zait.In the meaning "to seem to someone", the person takes -(r)i (niri) and the verb uses zait, just like gustatzen zait.
Keeping the verb singular after a number.
Bi euro falta zait.Bi euro falta zaizkit.bi euro is plural, and the missing thing is the subject, so the verb must be plural: zaizkit.
