بالرغم من / رغم
Despite
رغم and بالرغم من are concessive connectors used to link two contrasting ideas. They translate to 'despite' or 'in spite of' when followed by a noun, and 'although' when followed by a clause.
How It Works
In Modern Standard Arabic, expressing concession involves two main structures:
1. With a Noun Phrase: Use رغم or بالرغم من followed directly by a noun. The noun will take the genitive ending (-i) because it acts as the second part of an Idafa or follows a preposition.
Example: رغمَ المطرِ (Despite the rain).
2. With a Clause: If you need to follow the expression with a sentence (e.g., 'Despite he was tired'), you must use أنَّ. This creates the compound رغم أنَّ or بالرغم من أنَّ. Remember that أنَّ is one of Inna and its sisters, so the following subject must be in the accusative case (-a) or be an attached pronoun.
3. The Result Clause: When the 'despite' phrase starts the sentence, the main clause often begins with فـ or إلا أنَّ to emphasize the contrast, though this is not strictly mandatory in all contexts.
4. Stylistic Variants: You may also see على الرغم من. This is semantically identical to بالرغم من and is considered highly eloquent.
Examples (4)
- رغمَ الصعوباتِ، نجحَ الفريقُ في تحقيقِ هدفه.
Despite the difficulties, the team succeeded in achieving its goal.
Word by Word: Despite the difficulties, succeeded the team in achieving its goal.
Here, 'raghma' is followed by a noun in the genitive case (al-su'ūbāt-i).
- بالرغمِ من أنَّ الجوَّ كانَ بارداً، فقد ذهبنا إلى الشاطئ.
Although the weather was cold, we went to the beach.
Word by Word: In spite of that the weather was cold, [so] we went to the beach.
Because a full sentence follows, 'anna' is used, and 'al-jawwa' (the weather) takes the accusative case.
- استمرَّ في العملِ على الرغمِ من مرضِهِ الشديد.
He continued working despite his severe illness.
Word by Word: He continued in the work on the despite from his illness the severe.
This uses the variant 'ala al-raghmi min' followed by a noun phrase.
- رغمَ أنَّه يسكنُ بعيداً، إلا أنَّه يأتي دائماً في الوقتِ المحدد.
Although he lives far away, he always comes on time.
Word by Word: Despite that he lives far, except that he comes always in the time the limited.
Note the use of 'illa anna' to introduce the main clause, which is a common way to strengthen the contrast.
Common Mistakes
Omitting 'anna' before a clause.
رغم هو مريض ذهب إلى العمل.رغم أنَّه مريضٌ ذهب إلى العمل.You cannot place a pronoun or a full sentence directly after 'raghma'. You must use 'anna' to bridge the two.
Attaching a verb directly to 'raghma'.
رغم وصل متأخراً نجح.رغم وصولِهِ متأخراً نجح.Arabic requires either a noun (verbal noun/Masdar) or the particle 'anna' + a clause. You cannot follow 'raghma' directly with a conjugated verb.
