daaroor dat / daarvan om te

Daaroor Dat, Daarvan Om Te

Level 4

Sy hou van boeke. → Sy hou daarvan om te lees. (She likes reading.) Van becomes daarvan when a clause follows.

How It Works

1. From noun to clause. The preposition joins daar- when a clause follows:

  • Sy hou van musiek. → Sy hou daarvan om te dans. (She likes dancing.)
  • Ek dink aan my ma. → Ons dink daaraan om te trek. (We're thinking of moving.)
  • Ek sien na die vakansie uit. → Ek sien daarna uit om jou weer te sien. (I'm looking forward to seeing you again.)

2. Spelling. Daar + preposition is one word: daarvan, daaraan, daaroor, daarna, daarvoor, daarop. Met becomes daarmee. See daarmee, hiervoor, daaroor.

3. Where it goes. Daar + preposition stands where the preposition phrase would stand, before a ge- form or separable prefix. The clause comes last: Hy het my daaraan herinner dat die winkel vroeg toemaak. (He reminded me that the shop closes early.)

4. Needed or optional. With hou van and uitsien na, daar- is needed. With some other words it is often left out, especially in speech: Ek is bly (daaroor) dat jy gekom het. (I'm glad that you came.) Learn each verb with its preposition (see verbs with fixed prepositions and adjectives with fixed prepositions).

5. Never the bare preposition. A preposition cannot stand directly before om or dat. Say daarvan om te lees, never van om te lees.

Tip: When other words come between daar and the preposition, the two can split (see daar ... mee).

Examples (6)

  1. Sy hou daarvan om te lees.

    She likes reading.

Word by Word: She holds there-of for to read.

  2. Ek sien daarna uit om jou weer te sien.

I'm looking forward to seeing you again.

Word by Word: I see there-to out for you again to see.

Uitsien na (look forward to) becomes daarna ... uit, and the om te clause comes last.

  3. Ek is bly daaroor dat jy gekom het.

    I'm glad that you came.

Word by Word: I am glad there-about that you come have.

Here daaroor may be left out: Ek is bly dat jy gekom het.

  4. Hy het my daaraan herinner dat die winkel vroeg toemaak.

He reminded me that the shop closes early.

Word by Word: He has me there-of reminded that the shop early closes.

  5. Sorg daarvoor dat die deur gesluit is.

Make sure that the door is locked.

Word by Word: Care there-for that the door locked is.

  6. Ons dink daaraan om volgende jaar te trek.

We're thinking of moving next year.

Word by Word: We think there-of for next year to move.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the bare preposition before om te.

Sy hou van om te lees.
Sy hou daarvan om te lees.

Van cannot stand directly before om. It becomes daarvan, which points ahead to the om te clause.

  • Putting the bare preposition before dat.

Hy het my herinner aan dat die winkel vroeg toemaak.
Hy het my daaraan herinner dat die winkel vroeg toemaak.

Aan becomes daaraan, and it stands before the ge- form herinner.

  • Leaving the preposition in its noun position.

Ek sien uit na om jou te sien.
Ek sien daarna uit om jou te sien.

Na becomes daarna and comes before the separable prefix uit. The om te clause follows.
