Daarmee, Hiervoor, Daaroor

Level 3

To say with it, for this or about what, join daar, hier or waar to the preposition: Ek is tevrede daarmee. (I am happy with it.)

How It Works

1. Three front parts.

  • daar + preposition = it or that: daarmee (with it), daaroor (about it), daarvan (of it)
  • hier + preposition = this: hiermee (with this), hiervoor (for this)
  • waar + preposition = what, in questions: Waarmee skryf jy? (What are you writing with?)

2. Three prepositions change. In these words met becomes mee, vir becomes voor and tot becomes toe: daarmee, hiervoor, waartoe. So for that is daarvoor, never daarvir.

3. Where you meet them. Many verbs come with a fixed preposition (see verbs with fixed prepositions). When the thing is replaced by it, the daar word appears: Ek dink aan die toets. → Ek dink daaraan. (I am thinking about it.) Ons praat oor die film. → Ons praat daaroor. (We are talking about it.)

4. Things, not people. These words point to things, ideas and situations. For a person, use the preposition and a pronoun: Ek praat met hom. (I am talking to him.)

5. Preposition + dit. You will often hear forms such as met dit and vir dit in speech, and they can add emphasis: Vir dit is ek glad nie lus nie. (I don't feel like that at all.) In writing, the daar word is the standard choice.

Tip: Daar and its preposition can also split up: Daar weet ek niks van nie. See splitting daar ... mee.

Examples (6)

  1. Ek is baie tevrede daarmee.

I am very happy with it.

Word by Word: I am very satisfied there-with.

  2. Wat dink jy daarvan?

What do you think of it?

Word by Word: What think you there-of?

  3. Hiervoor betaal ek nie.

I am not paying for this.

Word by Word: Here-for pay I not.

    Vir becomes voor inside hiervoor.

  4. Waaroor praat julle?

    What are you talking about?

Word by Word: Where-about talk you?

In questions, waar joins the preposition.

  5. Ek het nie tyd daarvoor nie.

I don't have time for that.

Word by Word: I have not time there-for not.

  6. Waarmee skryf jy?

    What are you writing with?

Word by Word: Where-with write you?

Common Mistakes

  • Writing daarvir or daarmet.

Ek het nie tyd daarvir nie.
Ek het nie tyd daarvoor nie.

In these joined words vir changes to voor, met to mee and tot to toe.

  • Using a daar word for a person.

Ken jy Sipho? Ek werk elke dag daarmee.
Ken jy Sipho? Ek werk elke dag met hom.

Daar words refer to things and ideas. For a person, use the preposition + a pronoun.

  • Writing daar and the preposition apart when they stand together.

Ek is baie tevrede daar mee.
    Ek is baie tevrede daarmee.

When daar and the preposition stand side by side, they are written as one word.
