Greek is the official language of Greece and one of the two official languages of Cyprus. It is written in its own alphabet of 24 letters, and a small accent mark shows which part of a word is stressed. Search for a Greek app and you'll also find many for Ancient or Biblical Greek, which are older forms of the language with different grammar and pronunciation. Every app with a card below teaches Modern Greek, the Greek people speak today.
If you mainly want Greek to read and listen to at your level, our Greek comprehensible input comparison goes deeper.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Greek. You learn from Greek you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
Bubblegum turns what's coming up in your life into Greek you can read. Tell Poppy, your AI tutor, about a trip to Crete or dinner with your partner's family, and she writes a Greek conversation about it at your level. You can read it, play it aloud, and ask her about any line that loses you.
Poppy builds a flexible journey around your interests and level. Bubblegum isn't a person to talk with, so for speaking practice, try a tutor in Practice With a Teacher.
- A Greek Alphabet course of eight short chapters teaches each letter with its sound.
- Lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Read and listen to Greek lessons, stories, and news about things you care about.
- Ask Poppy about a sentence while you read.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, and you can export them to Anki.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- It doesn't play videos, and your own Greek articles can't become lessons. Paste a paragraph into the chat, and Poppy explains it.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

Free Podcasts and Greek TV
Super Easy Greek is a free beginner podcast where one person talks slowly about everyday things like phone calls and homes. When that feels easy, try Easy Greek, where the two hosts talk about living in Greece and answer listeners' questions. Members of either show get transcripts, with translations on the beginner show. In the Easy Greek videos, people in the streets of Athens answer questions, with Greek and English subtitles.
Once everyday Greek feels comfortable, you can watch ERTFLIX, the streaming service of Greece's public broadcaster, without a subscription. If you live outside Greece, sign up first, and expect a different set of shows, some without subtitles. If you'd like a goal to work toward, the Centre for the Greek Language runs the official Greek certificate exams from A1 to C2.

Common Questions
Which Greek app should a beginner choose?
If you are serious about learning Greek, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or start with Duolingo if you want short alphabet lessons, or with Language Transfer if you'd like a free audio course that explains how Greek works. To combine an app with podcasts and a tutor, see the best way to learn Greek.
Should I learn the Greek alphabet first?
Yes, because every Greek lesson is written in it. Watch for letters that look English but aren't: Ρ is an r sound, and Η sounds like the ee in see. You can start on the letters in Bubblegum's Greek Alphabet course, and Duolingo has reading lessons for them too.
Is Cypriot Greek the same as Modern Greek?
Not quite. Greek is an official language of Cyprus, but everyday speech there, called Cypriot Greek, has some words and sounds of its own. The apps with cards above teach Standard Modern Greek, and Cyprusays teaches the Cypriot way of speaking.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
