không nên

Should Not

Level 2

Không nên means should not. It is placed directly before a verb to give friendly advice or a recommendation.

How It Works

Không nên is a highly frequent modal verb used to give advice, suggestions, or recommendations. It translates to should not or ought not to.

Syntax:
Subject + không nên + Verb

Because Vietnamese has no verb conjugation, the main verb following không nên does not change form. It is a common myth that Vietnamese lacks modal verbs; linguists classify words like nên, cần, and phải as true modal verbs that govern main verbs.

Common Collocations & Softening Particles:
To make your advice more explicit, không nên is frequently paired with the verb khuyên (to advise). For example, you can say Tôi khuyên bạn không nên... (I advise you not to...). Additionally, in spoken Vietnamese, it is very common to pair không nên with sentence-ending particles like đâu (to soften the advice and make it sound less lecturing) or nhé (for friendly suggestions). For example: Bạn không nên thức khuya đâu. (You shouldn't stay up late.)

Standalone Short Answer:
In spoken Vietnamese, if the context is clear, you can drop the subject and main verb (see dropping the subject). This allows không nên to be used as a standalone short answer. For example, if someone asks "Tôi có nên mua cái này không?" (Should I buy this?), you can simply reply "Không nên." (You shouldn't.)

Degrees of Prohibition:
Learners often confuse không nên with other negative directives. It is important to understand the degree of restriction:

  • Không nên (Should not): Soft advice. Appeals to the listener's better judgment. The final decision is up to them.
  • đừng (Do not): A direct command or negative imperative. However, it is not necessarily harsh and is frequently used for warm, close requests between friends or family.
  • không được + V (Must not / Not allowed to): A strict rule or lack of permission. The subject has no choice.
  • cấm (Forbidden): The absolute strongest prohibition, used for official rules, laws, or severe warnings.

  1. Bạn không nên uống nhiều cà phê.

Word by Word: Friend not should drink much coffee.

  2. Bạn không nên hút thuốc.

    You shouldn't smoke.

A general recommendation appealing to the listener's better judgment.

  3. Anh ấy bị ốm, anh ấy không nên đi làm.

He is sick, he shouldn't go to work.

Used to make a logical suggestion based on a situation.

  4. Chúng ta không nên thức khuya.

    We shouldn't stay up late.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'không được' (must not) to give friendly advice.

Bạn không được uống nhiều cà phê.
Bạn không nên uống nhiều cà phê.

Using 'không được' sounds like a strict doctor's order or a bossy command. To give friendly, optional advice, always use 'không nên'.

  • Using 'không nên' to enforce a strict rule or prohibition, such as a no-parking sign.

Different MeaningBạn không nên đỗ xe ở đây.
Bạn không được đỗ xe ở đây.

'Không nên' translates to 'should not', which leaves the choice up to the listener. If something is strictly prohibited or illegal, you must use 'không được' (not allowed to) or 'cấm' (forbidden).
