nên

Should

Level 1

In Vietnamese, nên means 'should' or 'ought to'. It is used to give advice or suggest the best course of action.

How It Works

Vietnamese speakers use nên frequently because it is gentle and maintains harmony, avoiding the harshness of direct commands. It is softer than phải (must) and less urgent than cần (need).

  • Giving advice: Use it to recommend a good idea (e.g., Bạn nên nghỉ ngơi - You should rest).
  • Asking for advice: To ask if you should do something, use the question form có nên + Verb + không?, ask nên làm gì? (what should I do?), or use the formal phrase nên chăng (Is it advisable?).
  • Negation: To say 'should not', use không nên + Verb.
  • Past regret: Because Vietnamese verbs never change form, to say 'should have' done something in the past, add lẽ ra or đáng lẽ before nên (e.g., Lẽ ra bạn nên nói với tôi - You should have told me).
  • Pairing with 'khuyên': It is often used after the verb khuyên (to advise), as in Tôi khuyên bạn nên... (I advise you to...).
  • Conjunction warning: You will also see nên (or cho nên) used as a conjunction meaning 'so' or 'therefore' (e.g., vì ... nên ...). Don't confuse the two!
  • Main verb warning: Occasionally, nên acts as a main verb meaning 'to become' or 'to make/form' (e.g., nên người - to become a good person, làm nên chuyện - to achieve something). It is also commonly used in the phrase trở nên + Adjective to indicate a change in state (e.g., thời tiết trở nên lạnh hơn - the weather is becoming colder).

Examples (4)

  1. Bạn nên đi ngủ sớm.

You should go to bed early.

Word by Word: Friend should go sleep early.

A standard, gentle piece of advice using 'nên' before the verb phrase 'đi ngủ'.

  2. Chị ấy nên ăn nhiều rau.

    She should eat more vegetables.

Word by Word: Older sister that should eat much vegetable.

Notice how 'nên' does not change form based on the subject.

  3. Chúng ta không nên uống nhiều rượu.

We shouldn't drink a lot of alcohol.

Word by Word: We not should drink much alcohol.

To make it negative, 'không' is placed directly before 'nên'.

  4. Bạn nên hỏi ý kiến giám đốc.

You should ask the director's opinion.

Word by Word: Friend should ask opinion director.

Used in a professional context to suggest the best course of action.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing 'nên' after the verb like an English adverb.

    Bạn ngủ nên sớm.
    Bạn nên ngủ sớm.

Nên is a modal verb, not an adverb. It must always be placed directly before the main verb.

  • Using 'phải' (must) instead of 'nên' to give advice.

Bạn phải đi khám bác sĩ.
Bạn nên đi khám bác sĩ.

Learners often overuse phải (must) for advice, which sounds bossy or aggressive in Vietnamese. Use nên for gentle suggestions.

  • Incorrect negation placement.

    Bạn nên không thức khuya.
    Bạn không nên thức khuya.

To say 'should not', the negative word không must go before the modal verb: không nên.

Learn This First

To use 'nên' (should) effectively, you need to understand basic Vietnamese sentence structure and how to address others. Because 'nên' is placed directly before the verb to provide advice, knowing that verbs remain in their base form is key.
