ư

Really?

Level 4

The particle ư serves two distinct roles: as a formal, literary sentence-final word to ask questions of surprise or disbelief expressing shock ("Really?"), and as an intensifier that can be formal (quá ư) or highly colloquial (quá ư là).

How It Works

1. Expressing Surprise or Disbelief
When placed at the end of a declarative clause, ư turns the statement into a question of surprise or disbelief conveying strong emotion, similar to "Is it true that...?" This usage is highly formal, bookish, and common in literature or dubbed movies. It is very frequently paired with words like thật, thế, vậy, sao, nữa, or chứ (e.g., thật ư?, thế ư?, sao ư?, tại sao ư?, nữa ư?, or chứ ư?). Note: Be careful not to confuse the flat tone sentence-final particle ư with the downward tone ừ, which is an affirmative interjection meaning "yeah" or "mhm".

2. Pondering with "ư nhỉ"
When combined with nhỉ at the end of a sentence (ư nhỉ), it softens the question of surprise or disbelief into a pondering thought, meaning "Is that so, I wonder?".

3. Formal and Colloquial Intensifiers
Besides questioning, ư acts as an emphatic intensifier. In formal or literary contexts, it pairs with quá (quá ư) or tối (tối ư, meaning "extremely", e.g., tối ư quan trọng). Note that tối ư is archaic and almost exclusively restricted to a few fixed literary phrases. In contrast, the expanded phrase quá ư là + adjective (e.g., quá ư là dễ thương) can be used freely and is highly colloquial, extremely common in modern daily speech, vlogs, and social media.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'ư' for a neutral check when you do not mean to show surprise.

Different MeaningHôm nay bạn đi làm ư?
Hôm nay bạn đi làm hả?

This sentence is natural and means 'You are going to work today?!' with surprise or doubt. ư adds a feeling, so it does not fit a calm, neutral question. For a gentle check, use hả or à. Note that this does not apply to the colloquial intensifier quá ư là.

  • Using 'ư' to ask neutral, information-seeking yes/no questions.

    Bạn thích ăn phở ư?
Bạn có thích ăn phở không?

ư is heavily modal and only expresses shock or disbelief. To ask a neutral yes/no question to gather information, you must use the có ... không? pattern.
