Or

Level 1

Vietnamese has two main words for 'or': hay and hoặc. The one you choose depends on whether you are asking a question, making a statement, or how formal you want to be.

How It Works

In English, we use 'or' for everything. In Vietnamese, you choose between two words based on the context:

  • Hay is the required word for 'or' in questions when asking someone to make a choice. It is also required in statements that contain an embedded question (e.g., 'I don't know whether to choose A or B'). In everyday spoken Vietnamese, it is sometimes used in regular statements as a casual alternative to 'hoặc'.
  • Hoặc is the standard word for 'or' used in statements. It is neutral and works well in both writing and formal speech. You can also repeat it as hoặc [A] hoặc [B] to mean 'either [A] or [B]'.
  • Hay là can be used at the beginning of a sentence to make a suggestion, meaning 'How about...?' or 'Or should we...?'.

Both words can connect nouns, verbs, adjectives, or full clauses. To make the sentence flow better, especially before verbs or clauses, native speakers often add là to make hay là or hoặc là.

Important note: Do not confuse the conjunction hay ('or') with the adjective hay ('good/interesting') or the adverb hay ('often').

Examples (6)

  1. Bạn muốn uống cà phê hay trà?

Do you want to drink coffee or tea?

Word by Word: You want drink coffee or tea?

Because this is a direct question asking the listener to choose, we must use 'hay'.

  2. Bạn có thể chọn cà phê hoặc trà.

You can choose coffee or tea.

Word by Word: You have ability choose coffee or tea.

This is a standard declarative statement, so we use 'hoặc' as the neutral word for 'or'.

  3. Mình không biết nên đi ăn hay đi xem phim.

I don't know whether to go eat or go watch a movie.

Word by Word: I not know should go eat or go watch movie.

Even though this ends in a period, it contains an embedded question (uncertainty), so 'hay' is required.

  4. Hoặc bạn đi, hoặc tôi đi.

Either you go, or I go.

Word by Word: Or you go, or I go.

Repeating 'hoặc' before both options creates the 'either... or...' structure.

  5. Cuối tuần tôi thường đọc sách hoặc là nghe nhạc.

On weekends, I usually read books or listen to music.

Word by Word: Weekend I usually read book or be listen music.

Adding 'là' to 'hoặc' makes the sentence rhythm smoother when connecting verb phrases.

  6. Hay là chúng ta đi ăn phở đi!

How about we go eat pho!

Word by Word: Or is we go eat pho go!

Placing 'hay là' at the beginning of the sentence turns it into a friendly suggestion, like 'How about...?' or 'Or should we...?'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'hoặc' to ask someone to choose between options.

Bạn thích đi biển hoặc lên núi?
Bạn thích đi biển hay lên núi?

This is a very common beginner mistake. 'Hoặc' is mainly used in statements and offers ('either ... or'). When a question asks the listener to choose between options, use 'hay'.

Learn This First

To use 'hay' and 'hoặc' correctly, learners need to understand the basic structure of Vietnamese sentences and the distinction between statements and questions. Since 'hay' is specifically used for choices within questions, familiarity with basic question markers like 'có ... không?' provides the necessary context for interrogative syntax.
