thảo nào

No Wonder

Level 4

Expresses sudden realization ('no wonder') when new information explains a previously confusing situation.

How It Works

In Vietnamese, thảo nào is a highly frequent conversational marker used to express epistemic realization—that 'aha!' moment when a confusing fact finally makes sense.

Placement and Usage:
It typically attaches to the beginning of a clause and directly precedes the result or the previously puzzling fact. Place it at the beginning of the clause before the subject. In spoken Vietnamese, it is very common to add mà right after it (thảo nào mà...), which is optional and does not change the meaning. It can also stand completely alone as a one-word exclamation in conversation.

Complementary Pairs:
Learners often confuse thảo nào with hóa ra or thì ra (it turns out). The key distinction is that hóa ra and thì ra introduce the cause (the new information), while thảo nào introduces the effect (the puzzling fact). They are frequently paired together. The clause order is flexible: you can say Thảo nào [effect], hóa ra / thì ra [cause] or swap them to Hóa ra / thì ra [cause], thảo nào [effect].

Synonyms and Regional Variants:
You will often hear native speakers use bảo sao, hèn nào, or chả trách (along with its standard/written equivalents chẳng trách and không trách) in the North, and hèn chi, hèn gì, or biểu sao in the South. These are exact synonyms of thảo nào and function identically. Note that chả trách literally translates to 'not blame' or '[I] don't blame' (chả = not, trách = blame), which helps logically explain why it functions as 'no wonder'.

Examples (4)

  1. A: Chị ấy từng sống ở Tokyo 5 năm. / B: Thảo nào chị ấy nói tiếng Nhật giỏi thế!

A: She lived in Tokyo for 5 years. / B: No wonder she speaks Japanese so well!

Word by Word: A: Older sister that used to live in Tokyo 5 years. / B: No wonder older sister that speak language Japanese good so!

Thảo nào introduces the result (speaking Japanese well) that now makes perfect sense given the new information.

  2. Thảo nào hôm nay đường vắng, hóa ra là ngày lễ.

No wonder the streets are empty today; it turns out it's a holiday.

Word by Word: No wonder today street empty, turn out is day holiday.

Notice how thảo nào pairs with hóa ra. Thảo nào precedes the effect (empty streets), and hóa ra precedes the cause (holiday).

  3. Thảo nào anh ấy mệt, anh ấy đã làm việc cả đêm.

No wonder he's tired, he worked all night.

Word by Word: No wonder older brother that tired, older brother that already do work all night.

The puzzling fact (being tired) is introduced by thảo nào, followed by the explanation.

  4. A: Máy tính bị hỏng rồi. / B: Thảo nào!

A: The computer is broken. / B: No wonder!

Word by Word: A: Machine calculate suffer broken already. / B: No wonder!

Thảo nào can be used as a standalone exclamation in dialogue when the context of the puzzling fact is completely clear.

Common Mistakes

  • Reversing the cause and effect clauses.

Anh ấy mệt, thảo nào anh ấy đã làm việc cả đêm.
Thảo nào anh ấy mệt, anh ấy đã làm việc cả đêm.

Learners often mistakenly place 'thảo nào' before the explanation (working all night) instead of the result (being tired). 'Thảo nào' goes right before the fact that used to be puzzling, whichever clause comes first.

  • Using 'thảo nào' in formal writing to mean 'therefore'.

Công ty bị lỗ, thảo nào chúng tôi phải cắt giảm chi phí.
Công ty bị lỗ, vì vậy chúng tôi phải cắt giảm chi phí.

'Thảo nào' is a conversational marker for sudden realization, not a formal logical connector. In formal writing, use standard causal connectors like 'vì vậy' or 'cho nên'.

Learn This First

To understand 'thảo nào' (no wonder), learners should be familiar with the basic question word 'nào' and have a grasp of how Vietnamese expresses cause and effect. It is also helpful to understand similar realization markers like 'thì ra' to distinguish how 'thảo nào' specifically links a known fact to a previously puzzling situation.
