Noun + học

Field of Study Suffix

Level 5

Base Concept + học = Academic Discipline (e.g., xã hội + học = xã hội học / sociology)

How It Works

The suffix -học is derived from the Sino-Vietnamese root for 'to study' or 'to learn' (學). In modern Vietnamese, it functions as a derivational suffix—similar to '-ology', '-ics', or 'Studies' in English—to create nouns representing academic disciplines.

Key Rules and Nuances:

  • The Umbrella Term: The most common word utilizing this root is khoa học (science). Literally translating to 'branch/subject' (khoa) + 'study' (học), it serves as the umbrella term for all these scientific disciplines.
  • Sino-Vietnamese Bases: This suffix almost exclusively attaches to Sino-Vietnamese roots. It can attach directly to single-syllable roots (like y for medicine, forming y học) or multi-syllable compounds (like sinh vật for living things, forming sinh vật học).
  • Word Order: Because it is a Sino-Vietnamese suffix, it follows Sino-Vietnamese word order, placing the suffix at the end. This reverses the standard native Vietnamese noun-modifier order but matches English suffixes (e.g., Bio + logy).
  • The Exception: A notable exception where -học attaches to a non-Sino-Vietnamese base is modern geographic area studies, such as Khmer học (Khmer Studies) or Chăm học (Champa Studies).
  • Playful Usage: Just like in English where you might playfully invent words like 'burger-ology', Vietnamese speakers also use -học to create slang terms for everyday subjects (e.g., lô đề học for 'lottery-ology').

Avoiding Repetition with the Verb Học:
When talking about taking a class or studying a subject using the verb học, speakers often drop the -học suffix to avoid awkward repetition. For example, you say Tôi học Toán (I study math), not Tôi học toán học. To make it sound more natural, speakers frequently add the word môn (subject) before the discipline, such as học môn Toán. When used as a school subject, the remaining word is usually capitalized (e.g., học Toán, học Hóa, học Văn). However, when talking about majoring in a discipline at the university level, speakers typically keep the suffix by adding ngành (major/industry), such as Tôi học ngành Toán học (I am majoring in Mathematics).

Important Exceptions and Nuances:

  • The 'Sinh học' Trap: If you drop the suffix from sinh học (biology) after the verb học, you get học sinh, which means 'student'. To avoid confusion, you must say học môn Sinh or simply học Sinh.
  • The 'Khoa học' Exception: You cannot drop the suffix from khoa học (science) because học khoa changes the meaning entirely to 'studying a university faculty/department'. You must say học khoa học or học môn khoa học.
  • Subjects with '-lý': Note that some common sciences use the suffix -lý instead of -học, such as vật lý (physics) and địa lý (geography).

However, dropping the suffix is not because it is overly formal. When using other verbs like thích (to like) or giỏi (to be good at), the full suffix form is completely natural in everyday speech (e.g., Tôi thích toán học - I like mathematics). Furthermore, if you use a different verb like nghiên cứu (to research) or giảng dạy (to teach), you must keep the suffix because there is no phonetic repetition to avoid (e.g., nghiên cứu toán học).

Scholars and Practitioners:
To refer to a scholar or expert in a specific field, you can place nhà before the discipline noun, such as nhà toán học (mathematician) or nhà ngôn ngữ học (linguist).

Levels of Study vs. Discipline:
You will also see học in words like đại học (higher education / university level), tiểu học (primary education), or du học (studying abroad). Linguistically, these use the exact same Sino-Vietnamese root (學) and Modifier + Head word order as discipline names (e.g., đại học = 'great' + 'study', just as toán học = 'math' + 'study'). The difference lies only in the English translation, where it refers to a stage or type of education rather than an academic discipline suffix like '-ology'. Note that to specifically mean the physical 'school', you usually need to add trường (e.g., trường đại học).

The 'No Affixes' Myth:
Older textbooks often claim Vietnamese has no affixes. However, modern linguists classify roots like -học and -hóa as 'semi-affixes' (bán phụ tố) because they systematically derive new words, functioning exactly like suffixes in English.

Examples (5)

  1. Sinh học là một ngành khoa học tự nhiên.

Biology is a natural science discipline.

Word by Word: Life study is one branch science nature.

The root 'sinh' (life) combines with '-học' to form 'sinh học' (biology), which falls under the umbrella of 'khoa học' (science).

  2. Hóa học là môn học bắt buộc ở trường.

Chemistry is a compulsory subject at school.

Word by Word: Chemistry study is subject study compulsory at school.

The suffix elevates the basic concept of 'hóa' (transformation/chemistry) into the formal discipline of 'hóa học' (chemistry).

  3. Cô ấy đang nghiên cứu tâm lý học tại trường đại học.

She is researching psychology at the university.

Word by Word: She is research mind logic study at school university.

'Tâm lý' means mind or psychology; adding '-học' creates the formal academic field of psychology.

  4. Kinh tế học giúp chúng ta hiểu về thị trường.

Economics helps us understand the market.

Word by Word: Economy study help we understand about market.

Adding '-học' to 'kinh tế' (economy) creates the discipline of economics.

  5. Y học hiện đại đã phát triển rất nhanh.

Modern medicine has developed very quickly.

Word by Word: Medicine study modern already develop very fast.

'Y' (medicine/healing) is a single-syllable Sino-Vietnamese root that pairs directly with '-học' to mean medical science.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'học ngôn ngữ' when you mean the field of linguistics.

Different MeaningTôi đọc một cuốn sách về học ngôn ngữ.
Tôi đọc một cuốn sách về ngôn ngữ học.

This sentence is correct, but it means 'a book about learning languages'. 'Học ngôn ngữ' is the act of studying languages. To name the discipline of linguistics, use the suffix pattern ngôn ngữ học.

  • Attaching the suffix to pure native Vietnamese words instead of Sino-Vietnamese roots.

Chuyên gia về nước học đang kiểm tra dòng sông.
Chuyên gia về thủy văn học đang kiểm tra dòng sông.

Because '-học' is a Sino-Vietnamese suffix, it requires a Sino-Vietnamese base. 'Nước' (water) is a native word; the correct Sino-Vietnamese equivalent for hydrology is 'thủy văn học'.
