Noun + etmoq
Formal Compound Verbs with Etmoq
Etmoq means to do and joins a noun to make a verb, just like qilmoq: davom etmoq (to continue), tashkil etmoq (to organize), ishtirok etmoq (to take part).
How It Works
Etmoq is rarely used alone in modern standard Uzbek. Its main job is to make compound verbs with a noun, often a word from Arabic or Persian, the same way qilmoq does:
- davom etmoq (to continue)
- tashkil etmoq (to organize, to found)
- ishtirok etmoq (to take part)
- taklif etmoq (to invite, to offer)
- hal etmoq (to solve)
Endings go on etmoq. The noun stays the same: davom etadi (continues), davom etdi (continued), davom etyapti (is continuing), Davom eting! (Please go on!).
Etmoq or qilmoq? Many nouns take both: taklif etmoq / taklif qilmoq, hal etmoq / hal qilmoq. The etmoq version is more formal and common in writing. For davom, modern usage has settled on davom etmoq; davom qilmoq appears mostly in older literature.
The verb decides the case. Each compound keeps its own case pattern (see feʼl boshqaruvi): konferensiyada ishtirok etmoq (to take part in a conference) takes -da, and sizni toʻyga taklif etmoq (to invite you to the wedding) takes -ni and -ga.
Passive. Add the passive -il to et-: tashkil etildi (was organized). It often appears with tomonidan.
Etmoq vs yetmoq. Yetib kelmoq (to arrive) comes from yetmoq (to reach) and is spelled with y.
