-vot
Colloquial Present Continuous -vot
Spoken -vot = written -yap: kelvotti = kelyapti (is coming), ketvotman = ketyapman (I'm leaving).
How It Works
1. Swapping -yap for -vot
Take a verb in the -yap present continuous and replace -yap with -vot. The person endings stay the same:
- kelyapman → kelvotman (I'm coming)
- qilyapsan → qilvotsan (you're doing)
- kelyapti → kelvotti (he or she is coming)
- ketyapmiz → ketvotmiz (we're leaving)
- ishlayapsiz → ishlavotsiz (you're working)
In the third person, -yapti becomes -votti, with a double t.
2. Faster still
In quick speech the sounds blend even more. The l of kel- often drops (kevotti), and qilvotsan can sound like qilvossan. Chat messages spell these in many ways. Learn to recognize them; you do not need to copy them.
3. Where it comes from
-yap grew from an old form of the verb yotmoq (to lie down), a little like saying someone is lying there reading. -vot probably comes from another form of the same verb. Grammars describe -vot as a feature of the Tashkent dialect.
4. When to use which
Use -yap in writing, in class and whenever you want to sound careful. -vot is fine in relaxed talk with friends. News and formal writing prefer -moqda, and older literature has -(a)yotir.
5. Still the present
The -ti in kelvotti looks like the past ending -di, but it is not. Kelvotti means he is coming now. For he came, say keldi.
