Action Nouns with -uv

Level 5

-uv after a consonant, or -v after a vowel, turns a verb into a noun: yoz- → yozuv (writing, script), sina- → sinov (test).

How It Works

The forms.

  • After a consonant, add -uv: yoz- → yozuv (writing, script), tekshir- → tekshiruv (inspection), uchrash- → uchrashuv (meeting), kelish- → kelishuv (agreement)
  • After i, the i becomes u and -v is added: oʻqi- → oʻquv (study, training), toʻqi- → toʻquv (weaving)
  • After a, the a becomes o and -v is added: sina- → sinov (test), sayla- → saylov (election)

-uv or -ish? -ish works with almost any verb and names the action itself: kitob oʻqish (reading a book). -uv words are mostly fixed nouns: oʻquv yili (school year), lotin yozuvi (the Latin script). You cannot make a new -uv word from every verb, so learn these words as vocabulary.

Related endings. The same vowel change appears in -(u)vchi, which names the person who does something: yozuvchi (writer), oʻquvchi (pupil), tinglovchi (listener). -im and -ma also make fixed nouns from verbs.

    Sinovdan oʻtmoq means to pass a test or to be tested.

    The election will take place on Sunday.

  6. Ikki kompaniya oʻrtasida kelishuv imzolandi.

    An agreement was signed between the two companies.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the vowel change after a.

    Ertaga matematikadan sinav bor.
    Ertaga matematikadan sinov bor.

    A stem-final a becomes o before -v: sina- gives sinov, and sayla- gives saylov.

  • Using an -uv word as the action of a verb with an object (meant: I like reading books).

    Men kitob oʻquvni yaxshi koʻraman.
    Men kitob oʻqishni yaxshi koʻraman.

    Oʻquv is a fixed noun meaning study or training. To name the action of reading, use -ish.
