kɛkɛ (Just, Merely)

Just, Merely: Kɛkɛ

Level 4

Merehwɛ kɛkɛ means I am just looking. Kɛkɛ says it is only this and nothing more.

How It Works

1. After a noun

  • Ɛyɛ nsuo kɛkɛ. (It is just water.)
  • Twi kɛkɛ na ɔkasa. (He speaks only Twi.)

The second example moves the noun to the front with focus na, a common way to say only.

2. After an action
Kɛkɛ says that is all someone did: Merehwɛ kɛkɛ (I am just looking), Mebisaa kɛkɛ (I was only asking). Ɔtenaa ase kɛkɛ means he just sat there, doing nothing else.

Because kɛkɛ follows the verb, a past verb takes the form used before another word: bisaa, not bisaeɛ.

3. Not just ... but
With mmom: Ɛnyɛ adamfo kɛkɛ, na mmom adamfo papa (Not just a friend, but a true friend).

4. Kɛkɛ and nko ara
Nko ara means alone, with no one else: me nko ara (me alone). Kɛkɛ means merely, nothing more than this. After a number, only is pɛ: baako pɛ (only one).

Examples (6)

  1. Ɛyɛ nsuo kɛkɛ.

    It is just water.

Word by Word: it-is water merely

  2. Merehwɛ kɛkɛ.

    I am just looking.

    Word by Word: I-am-looking merely

A handy phrase in a shop or market.

  3. Ɔtenaa ase kɛkɛ.

    He just sat there.

Word by Word: he-sat down merely

Kɛkɛ after the action suggests he did nothing else.

  4. Twi kɛkɛ na ɔkasa.

    He speaks only Twi.

Word by Word: Twi merely FOCUS he-speaks

  5. Mebisaa kɛkɛ.

    I was only asking.

    Word by Word: I-asked merely

The past ends in -aa because kɛkɛ follows the verb.

  6. Ɛnyɛ adamfo kɛkɛ, na mmom adamfo papa.

Not just a friend, but a true friend.

Word by Word: it-is-not friend merely, but rather friend good

Common Mistakes

  • Putting kɛkɛ before the noun, as in English just water.

    Ɛyɛ kɛkɛ nsuo.
    Ɛyɛ nsuo kɛkɛ.

Kɛkɛ follows the word it limits. English says just water, but Twi says water kɛkɛ.

  • Using the clause-final past before kɛkɛ.

    Mebisaeɛ kɛkɛ.
    Mebisaa kɛkɛ.

Kɛkɛ follows the verb, so the verb is not at the end of its clause. The past takes the doubled vowel, bisaa.
