mmom (Rather)
Rather: Mmom
Not X, na mmom Y = not X, but rather Y: Ɛnyɛ Kofi, na mmom Kwame.
How It Works
1. Correcting a fact
Deny the wrong part, then give the right part after na mmom:
- Ɛnyɛ Kofi, na mmom Kwame. (Not Kofi, but rather Kwame.)
- Wankɔ sukuu, na mmom ɔkɔɔ adwuma. (He didn't go to school; he went to work instead.)
2. Advice: not this, but that
After a negative command, na mmom gives the better choice: Nkasa, na mmom tie (Don't talk; rather, listen). For the command itself, see Don't: Negative Commands.
3. Mmom at the start
Mmom can open a new sentence after a negative one: Mempɛ tii. Mmom, ma me nsuo. (I don't want tea. Instead, give me water.)
4. With a focus sentence
Na mmom often completes It Is Not ... Who: ɛnyɛ ... na: Ɛnyɛ sika na ɛhia, na mmom ɔdɔ (It is not money that matters, but rather love).
5. Mmom or nanso?
But: nanso adds a contrast and keeps both parts true: Mepɛ, nanso menni sika (I want it, but I have no money). Na mmom replaces the first part: it was wrong, or not the best choice.
Examples (5)
