-meyecek
Negative Future
The negative future is formed by adding the negative suffix -me/-ma, a buffer -y-, and the future suffix -ecek/-acak to a verb stem.
How It Works
The negative future follows a specific sequence: Verb Stem + Negative Suffix + Buffer 'y' + Future Suffix + Personal Suffix.
1. Negative Suffix: Choose -me or -ma based on two-way vowel harmony. Unlike the affirmative future, irregular stems like git- or ye- do not change their vowels or consonants here (e.g., gitmeyecek, yemeyecek).
2. The Buffer 'y': Because the negative suffix ends in a vowel and the future suffix starts with one, a buffer 'y' is always required.
3. Vowel Harmony & Softening: The future suffix (-ecek/-acak) determines the four-way vowel harmony of the personal suffix (e.g., -ecek triggers -im). Remember that the 'k' softens to 'ğ' for 'I' and 'We' forms due to consonant softening.
4. Word Stress: In this pattern, the word stress shifts to the syllable immediately before the negative suffix (e.g., GEL-me-ye-cek).
Formal vs. Spoken: In formal writing, always use -meyecek. In casual speech, you might hear -miyecek, but writing it this way is a spelling error.
Examples (4)
- Yarın yağmur yağmayacak.
It will not rain tomorrow.
Word by Word: Tomorrow rain will-not-fall.
A definite prediction about the weather using the back-vowel harmony (-ma + y + acak).
- Bu hatayı bir daha yapmayacağım.
I will not make this mistake again.
Word by Word: This mistake one more will-not-do-I.
A firm promise. Note the 'k' changing to 'ğ' in 'yapmayacağım'.
- Onlar bizimle gelmeyecekler mi?
Won't they come with us?
Word by Word: They with-us will-not-come-they [question]?
A negative future question using front-vowel harmony (-me + y + ecek).
- Seni asla unutmayacağız.
We will never forget you.
Word by Word: You never will-not-forget-we.
A strong statement of intention for the future.
Common Mistakes
Omitting the mandatory buffer 'y'.
Gelmeecek.Gelmeyecek.Because the negative suffix (-me/-ma) always ends in a vowel, you must use the buffer 'y' before the future suffix (-ecek/-acak).
Forgetting consonant softening for 'I' and 'We'.
Yapmayacakım.Yapmayacağım.The 'k' at the end of the future suffix must soften to 'ğ' when followed by a suffix starting with a vowel, as seen in -eceğim.
Applying stem changes to irregular verbs like 'gitmek'.
Gidmeyecek.Gitmeyecek.In the negative future, the negative suffix protects the stem. Irregularities like t becoming d do not occur; the stem remains in its original form.
How It Connects
