Ile Meaning and

Level 2

The word ile (or its suffix form -(y)lA) joins two nouns together. It is often translated as 'and', but it specifically suggests that the two items belong together as a unit or pair.

How It Works

The conjunction ile has two forms: a standalone word and a suffix.

1. Standalone Form:
You can write ile as a separate word between two nouns. In this form, it does not change based on vowel harmony.
Example: Elma ile armut (Apple and pear).

2. Suffix Form: -(y)lA
In daily speech, it is much more common to attach it to the first noun as a suffix. It follows two-way vowel harmony:

  • -la: After back vowels (a, ı, o, u). Example: tuzla biber (salt and pepper).
  • -le: After front vowels (e, i, ö, ü). Example: sütle şeker (milk and sugar).

If the noun ends in a vowel, you must use the buffer consonant -y-, resulting in -yla or -yle (e.g., arabayla vapur).

3. The 'Ve' Test:
To distinguish if ile is a conjunction ('and') or a postposition ('with'), try replacing it with ve. If the sentence still makes sense and means 'and', it is a conjunction.

4. Stress Pattern:
Crucially, the suffix -(y)lA is never stressed. The word stress falls on the syllable immediately before the suffix. For example, in araBAyla, the stress is on 'ba'.

5. Usage Limits:
While ile is common for pairs of nouns or verbal nouns (e.g., gelmesiyle gitmesi), it cannot link adjectives, adverbs, or full sentences. For these, use ve. When using personal pronouns, the construction benimle (Genitive + ile) is the natural way to express 'Me and...'.

Examples (4)

  1. Annemle babam pazara gittiler.

My mother and father went to the market.

    Word by Word: My-mother-and my-father to-the-market they-went.

Here, 'annemle' uses the suffix form -le to join 'mother' and 'father' as a natural pair.

  2. Masada tuz ile biber eksik.

Salt and pepper are missing from the table.

Word by Word: On-the-table salt and pepper missing.

Using the standalone 'ile' is slightly more formal but emphasizes the two items as a set.

  3. Seninle ben bu işi hallederiz.

You and I will handle this job.

Word by Word: With-you I this job we-handle.

When using pronouns like 'sen' (you), most pronouns take the genitive ending before 'ile' (seninle). The plural 'onlar' is the exception (onlarla).

  4. Kediyle köpek kavga ediyor.

The cat and the dog are fighting.

    Word by Word: The-cat-and the-dog fight they-are-doing.

Since 'kedi' ends in a vowel, the buffer -y- is used before the suffix -le.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'ile' to join two verbs or sentences.

    Eve geldi ile yemek yedi.
    Eve geldi ve yemek yedi.

'ile' can only join nouns or verbal nouns. To join actions or independent sentences, you must use 've' or other conjunctions.

  • Using 'ile' to connect two adjectives.

    Elma kırmızı ile tatlı.
    Elma kırmızı ve tatlı.

'ile' is restricted to nouns. When connecting adjectives or adverbs, you must use 've'.

  • Using the nominative case for personal pronouns with the suffix form.

    Benle Ali sinemaya gittik.
    Benimle Ali sinemaya gittik.

When using the suffix form -(y)le with personal pronouns, the pronoun must be in the genitive case (benim, senin, onun, bizim, sizin). Only 'onlar' can remain in the plain form.

Learn This First

To understand 'ile' as a conjunction, you need to know how it functions similarly to 'and' (ve). Additionally, since 'ile' is frequently used as a suffix -(y)le, you must understand two-way vowel harmony and the use of the buffer consonant -y- for vowel-ending words.
