Future Questions

Level 2

The future question is formed by adding the future suffix -(y)ecek/-(y)acak to the verb stem, followed by the separate question particle mi/mı and a personal ending (except for the 3rd person plural).

How It Works

The future question pattern is the standard way to ask 'Will...?' or 'Are you going to...?' in Turkish. It consists of three main parts:

1. The Future Suffix: Attached directly to the verb stem. It follows two-way vowel harmony (-ecek or -acak). If the verb stem ends in a vowel, a buffer -y- is used.
2. The Question Particle: The word mi or mı is written as a separate word. Because it follows the future suffix, it will always be mi (after -ecek) or mı (after -acak).
3. Personal Endings: For most persons, the personal endings attach to the question particle. If the ending starts with a vowel (1st person singular/plural), you must use a second buffer -y- (e.g., miyim, miyiz).

The 3rd Person Plural Exception: When using 'onlar' (they), the plural suffix -lar/-ler attaches directly to the verb stem, and the question particle follows alone (e.g., Gelecekler mi?).

Important Note on Consonants: Unlike the affirmative future tense where the 'k' softens to 'ğ', in questions the 'k' remains hard (e.g., gelecek miyim?) because the next letter is not part of the same word.

Examples (5)

  1. Yarın yağmur yağacak mı?

    Will it rain tomorrow?

Word by Word: Tomorrow rain will-fall [question]?

A simple prediction about the weather using the 3rd person singular (no personal ending).

  2. Bu akşam bize gelecek misin?

Are you going to come to us tonight?

Word by Word: This evening to-us will-come [question]-you?

Asking about a specific plan. Note that the personal ending '-sin' is on the particle 'mi'.

  3. Sınavı geçecek miyim?

    Will I pass the exam?

Word by Word: Exam [accusative] will-pass [question]-[buffer]-I?

The 'k' in 'geçecek' does not soften because 'miyim' is a separate word. Note the buffer -y- between 'mi' and 'im'.

  4. Onlar da bizimle gelecekler mi?

Will they come with us too?

Word by Word: They also with-us will-come-plural [question]?

In the 3rd person plural, the '-ler' suffix stays on the verb, and the question particle 'mi' comes last.

  5. Bizimle tatile çıkacak mısınız?

Are you (plural/polite) going to go on vacation with us?

    Word by Word: With-us to-vacation will-go-out [question]-you(plural)?

    Using the polite/plural form 'mısınız'.

Common Mistakes

  • Attaching the personal ending to the verb instead of the question particle (except for the 3rd person plural).

    Geleceksin mi?
    Gelecek misin?

For most persons, the personal endings 'climb' onto the question particle 'mi'. However, for 'onlar' (they), the suffix '-lar/-ler' must stay on the verb: 'Gelecekler mi?'

  • Softening the 'k' in the future suffix before the question particle.

    Geleceğ miyim?
    Gelecek miyim?

Consonant softening (k to ğ) only happens when a suffix starting with a vowel is attached. Since 'mi' is a separate word, the 'k' stays as it is.

  • Writing the question particle attached to the verb.

    Yapacakmısın?
    Yapacak mısın?

The question particle 'mi/mı' must always be written as a separate word.
