-meden önce

Before Doing Something

Level 3

The pattern -meden önce (or -madan önce) is used to link two actions where the main action happens first, before the action in the -meden clause. It translates to 'before doing [verb]' in English.

How It Works

To form this pattern, take the verb stem (the infinitive minus -mek/-mak) and add -mEdEn önce:

  • Use -madan önce if the last vowel of the stem is a, ı, o, or u.
  • Use -meden önce if the last vowel of the stem is e, i, ö, or ü.

Unlike many other Turkish suffixes, this one is 'frozen,' meaning it does not take personal endings like -im or -sin. If the subject of the 'before' clause is different from the main clause, you simply state the subject explicitly at the beginning of the phrase (e.g., Yağmur yağmadan önce... - Before the rain starts...).

Key Characteristics:

  • Tense Neutrality: The -meden önce construction does not have its own tense. It inherits its time frame (past, present, or future) from the main verb at the end of the sentence. For example, Uyumadan önce kitap okudum (Before sleeping, I read) vs. Uyumadan önce kitap okuyacağım (Before sleeping, I will read).
  • Positive Meaning: Although this suffix contains the -me/-ma negative marker, the construction itself has a positive meaning ('before doing something'). It does not mean 'before not doing.'

Important Distinction:
If you use -meden without the word önce, it usually means 'without doing' (e.g., Bakmadan geçti - He passed without looking). Always include önce when you want to specify a temporal sequence.

Examples (4)

  1. Dışarı çıkmadan önce anahtarlarını al.

Take your keys before going out.

Word by Word: Outside before-going-out your-keys take.

Here, 'çık-' (to go out) takes '-madan önce' because of the back vowel 'ı'.

  2. Film başlamadan önce mısır aldık.

We bought popcorn before the movie started.

Word by Word: Movie before-starting popcorn we-bought.

The action of buying popcorn happened earlier than the movie starting.

  3. Türkiye'ye gelmeden önce biraz Türkçe öğrendim.

I learned some Turkish before coming to Turkey.

    Word by Word: To-Turkey before-coming a-little Turkish I-learned.

'Gel-' (to come) takes '-meden önce' because of the front vowel 'e'.

  4. Uyumadan önce kitap okurum.

I read a book before sleeping.

Word by Word: Before-sleeping book I-read.

This shows a habitual action using the aorist tense in the main clause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the infinitive form instead of the adverbial suffix.

    Yemek yemek önce ellerini yıka.
    Yemek yemeden önce ellerini yıka.

In English, we say 'before eating,' but in Turkish, the bare infinitive '-mek' cannot stand directly before 'önce'. Use the '-meden' suffix. A form like '-mekten önce' exists, but it is rarer.

  • Confusing noun 'before' with verb 'before'.

    Okulmadan önce kahvaltı yaptım.
    Okuldan önce kahvaltı yaptım.

If you are using a noun (like 'school'), use -den önce. Use '-meden önce' only with verb stems.

Learn This First

To understand '-meden önce' (before doing), you first need to be familiar with the basic 'before' structure used with nouns (-den önce). You also need to understand how the verbal suffix -me/-ma functions as a verbal noun base, and how two-way vowel harmony determines the correct form of the suffix.
