Naming a Colour

Level 2

The examples here place the noun first, followed by สี (sǐi - colour), and then the colour name. Read the whole phrase to identify which object is being described.

How It Works

The word สี (sǐi) means "colour." This entry practises a noun phrase with the noun, สี, and a colour name in that order.

1. Read the whole colour phrase.
Some words used as colour names also have noun meanings: ส้ม (sôm) can name the orange fruit, and น้ำตาล (nám-taan) can mean sugar. In this pattern, สี marks the colour use. Do not assume that กระเป๋าน้ำตาล always means "a bag of sugar"; a shorter phrase needs its context. The explicit colour phrase สีน้ำตาล means brown.

2. Distinguish the written words.
สี has no tone mark and is read with a rising tone. The number four (สี่ - sìi) has a tone mark and a low tone. The exercise compares the spellings; it does not turn a malformed number phrase into a correct count of cars.

3. Keep the pattern in context.
Use สี in the pattern practised here. Shorter colour descriptions involving words such as black (ดำ) or white (ขาว) should be read in their full context, rather than assigned a universal register or special meaning. Compare เสื้อสีแดง, an explicit red-shirt description, with เสื้อแดง, a shorter phrase. Omission alone does not establish a political reference.

Examples (4)

  1. รถสีดำ

    A black car

Word by Word: car + color + black

A simple description using the standard Noun + สี + Color pattern.

  2. ฉันชอบกระเป๋าสีน้ำตาล

    I like the brown bag.

Word by Word: I + like + bag + color + sugar (brown)

Here, สี makes the colour meaning explicit: น้ำตาล is used for brown in the bag description, rather than naming sugar.

  3. ท้องฟ้าสีฟ้า

    The blue sky.

Word by Word: sky + color + sky (light blue)

In Thai, the word for light blue is the same as the word for sky (ฟ้า). Using สีฟ้า clarifies it as the color.

  4. แมวสีขาวตัวนั้น

    That white cat.

Word by Word: cat + color + white + classifier + that

This shows how the color pattern fits with pointing words.

Common Mistakes

  • Using English word order (Color + Noun).

    สีแดงเสื้อ
    เสื้อสีแดง

In the noun phrase requested here, the noun comes first and the colour description follows it. Read the corrected phrase as a red-shirt description.

  • Confusing the written colour word 'sǐi' with the number 'sìi' (four).

    รถสี่ดำ
    รถสีดำ

The tone-marked word (สี่) means four, so it cannot replace the colour word in this exercise. The incorrect string is not a well-formed way to count four black cars. Use the corrected spelling for the requested colour description.

Learn This First

To name a color in Thai, you need to understand that adjectives and modifiers follow the noun they describe. The word 'สี' (sǐi) acts as a prefix for color names, and the entire color phrase is placed immediately after the noun.
